Chapter Twenty-Two

Sin looked out over the estate. His mother’s parties were always lavish affairs, expensive and flawless. She’d been practicing for almost 40 years, they should be, but she did have a unique touch, subtle elegance paired with splashes of unexpected color. Maybe there was too much pink, but then the white carnations, roses and candles brought it all back from the gaudy abyss.

“I think I’m getting pink eye.” His sister Nancy groaned, as they lounged in the backyard before the wave of guests arrived.

He lifted a brow.

“Are you commenting on mom’s taste, Nance?” Sin asked, stretching his legs out to get more comfortable in the patio chair.

“Does it get worse every year, or is it just my rose-colored glasses?” She quipped in self-mockery.

Sin looked at his sister with fond amusement. How had she become so cynical?

“At least she isn’t bloodless like some society wives.” He said, thinking of his mother who had more than her share of courage and passion, even if she did often stretch the boundaries of good taste.

She had also never embraced the life of crime, making sure to raise her children away from it all, out of the city. He hadn’t known what the family business was until he was in his teens. Later he realized his mother had been trying to keep him away from that business and all of its dangers, physical and moral for as long as she could. His father had finally issued an order and started his education in the mob, which was a good thing overall since in order to swim with sharks, you had to have the mindset of one and weakness was a liability.

Nancy sighed. “That’s true. Grace and Grit. That’s mama alright. You’re so much like her, Ash. Except when you tried to be like daddy.”

“Tried to be like daddy? When was that?”

“Oh come on, Ash. You had the charm and diplomacy of a royal prince and the patience of a saint. I tried to be like you, but I’m too emotional. Then one day you changed, it seemed so sudden, I didn’t understand it, but since you didn’t change with mom and me, I figured it was to show daddy and everyone else you could handle things. You could be just as ruthless as the rest of them, and you were.”

Sin looked at her curiously. “And how would you know that?”

“Ash, I’m not an idiot. I know a lot of what you and daddy did.” She took a deep breath. “It’s the way of things. We are members of a different order, a society within a society.” He saw the frown crease her forehead, the pursing of her lips. From the look on her face, it was a society she could do without.

When she’d entered into an arranged marriage with Joey Flynn, he’d been happy for her because it looked like a love match, a rare thing in their world. It took him some time to realize the man was an abusive bastard.

Instead of ordering a hit on Joey, he’d done it himself.
